Synopsis

The professional engineering course on Legislation, Ethics and the path to Professional Registration in full is a 2 day intensive session designed to give students an understanding of the obligations under current legislation and to provide direction on a pathway to ensuring compliance. Professional engineering registration, summarily addresses the requirement of the Professional Engineers Act 2002 (Qld) to provide expertise, services and supervision in the engineers field of competence. The course can be customised to suit the recipients to include issues in focus or other legislative, case law or ethical topics.

The second component walks students through engineering ethics. Through case history and workshops, students are taught by example to identify, manage and assess ethically in decision making and design processes. This section is run as a tutorial where students workshop through real world examples in developing ethical solutions. The session closes on the pathway to Professional Registration through the Chartered Professional Engineering Program and subsequent registration with the Board of Professional Engineers.

Target Audience

The course is aimed toward engineering professionals in design, execution and supervisory roles. All sectors both public and private are required to understand their obligations under state legislation. Ethics in engineering is part of good practice, a requirement in registered professional engineering and an obligation under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and the ASX corporate governance policies.

Course Benefit

Students will receive an understanding of the Professional Engineers Act 2002 (Qld) and their obligations as engineers working in Queensland. The intent is to ensure that engineers who perform professional engineering services as defined by legislation are aware of their legislative requirements. The intent of this course is to give students the material and training environment to explore and understand their obligations. Professionalisation of engineering aligns with doctors, lawyers, accountants and other professions in Australia.

The ethics component of this course is intended to provide engineers with case examples and scenarios to work through to build on ethical understanding and consideration. Ethical practice in all business is promoted, this course aims to focus on the impacts of engineers in design, execution and supervision and the potential for risk and harm.

Learning Method

The course requires student participation and builds on the experiences within the classroom. The session is run centrally by the facilitator providing insight in to the application of the legislation and guiding students on ethical applications in engineering. Coupled with the facilitation, students will be provided with a set of course notes intended to be taken away and reviewed in the work place.
